Bioplastics packaging waste - Hot composting at home now made possible

The hot composting bin was originally pioneered by DS Smith in the UK. The essence is that an EPP bin, which is sturdy and insulating, works much better than all other bins made from roto-moulded and but poorly insulating PE.

In cooperation with DS Smith, Synbra Group through its subsidiary Synprodo, now is about to take this hot bin concept to the continental European market and it is being covered by an industry coalition. It is targeted to realise the production of the hot bin in Europe, the USA, Japan and China, all through selected partners, who sign up to the franchise.

After first field work, it now appeared that the hot bin is ideal to dispose of the BioFoam® cups and packaging. BioFoam® is certified according to industrial composting standard EN 13432 and it does not break down at room temperature. Yet in a hot bin, it composts extremely fast. Cups were put in a PE net, to allow identification, and added to a ‘life’ and fully functioning hot bin, reaching 60oC-70oC due to its excellent insulation. Within 3 weeks all BioFoam® cups were composted. As is shown below. Also the Greeny ice packaging indeed degraded very fast in the same time.

Not only BioFoam, but also thermoformed PLA made Ingeo® from Natureworks; type 2003 as well Luminy® from Total-Corbion; type LX175 and BioFlex® from FKUR type 1130, all composted within 3 weeks. This shows that the End of Life (EoL) for all bioplastics can be accelerated and that all industrially compostable bioplastics have the potential to become home compostable with a simple device. As a result bioplastics packaging waste does not have to leave the premises and will not mix with conventional plastics.

 An internet shippable stackable bin will be produced by Synprodo by the end of 2017 and can be tailor made in larger dimensions to suit the needs of sport clubs, canteens or schools, mixing food waste with bioplastics. Sport clubs or schools can convert their entire canteen waste stream to only using bioplastics.
